“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth…Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters…”
Genesis 1:1-2
“In the beginning God created…” Oh, the volumes that can be written from the grand opening of scripture! The precision and power of the words through which God introduces himself to us is no accident. Through this simple declaration, He steps onto the pages of space and time as the self existent One who was before “the beginning.”
As the creator of all things He Himself was not created. Indeed, as the transcendent One above and beyond the finite universe He unveils His majestic supremacy, summing it up; “God created.” He brought forth the heavens and the earth, drawing them out of the storehouse of His infinite wisdom and imagination. The new work of creation flowed from the beauty of His heart, the power of His Word, and the skill of His hands.
He fashioned something wondrous out of absolutely nothing, so the Hebrew word translated “created” signifies.
And so it is with us. Out of formlessness, emptiness, the darkest times, the deepest water, His creative power stands poised to unleash a whole new work in our lives. Perhaps even now, God’s Spirit hovers over you, waiting for the right moment to speak light, life and beauty into your life…
